Not technically a JRPG, but Battle Chasers: Nightwar dabbles in similar stuff. It’s mostly focused on the interplay between your actions in the dungeons/overworld and the way it segues in and out of combat. Lots of lil tricks and mechanics that are fun to get the hang of

I’m not remotely opposed to gay villains, but Gantu, Reuben and Hamsterveil all have that department covered already
