When I bought mine, it cost less than half what they seem to be going for today on eBay. In '96 they were $650 new which is about double today, $1300. There are new ones made at that price though they changed a couple of things. There is a super mega ultra version , mega bucks. Maybe one day!

It looks a bit of a novelty toy to me. I have a Technics SL1200 MK2 from the early 80s I bought through eBay years ago. Plus Audio Technica cartridge and micro line stylus. I love it. You can buy a brand new version as it's been put back into production, if you can afford it 😂 I can't

"Free" can cost you by damaging your precious vinyl, permanently. Damage is a constant hazard. I always handle with extreme care using the cue lever to place and remove the arm from the record. To do that by hand always end up scratching an LP at some point. So what is your record player?

You won't know if you have an LP with a pressing fault, that happens way more than it should. Just save up and buy a good quality 2nd hand classic like the Technics SL1200. There are a lot for sale out there. Aways look for condition as they became the standard for DJs. Your records will love you

Maybe it needs a new needle. A single LP is way more expensive than a lot of cheap styluses in low end players. Any doubt, replace the needle . Or better , upgrade the turntable, it's an ongoing process

The needle doesn't scratch the vinyl unless the turntable gets knocked. If you were listening to it then the needle started to skip, it's because the needle was forced out of the groove by either something small stuck on the record blocking the groove, or a nasty scratch. Can you see the scratch?

Don't you mean that you scratched it using a record player?
Getting a good turntable helps protect your records. Very lightweight arm , unlike cheapo players.
You have to teach yourself to handle these fragile items with extreme care as one slip and you have a permanent annoying scratch .

Me , my Rick and my old band mates from 40 years ago.

My 1979 Rickenbacker 4001. Bought 1979. Well gigged. Non stock bridge. I did turn it black with the Rickenbacker name in white but decided to go back to original look . Haven't re-coloured the letters yet though.
