Anyway, for as memed on as Shrek in general gets, the movies as a whole are surprisingly consistent in quality. I'd say it's 2 >>> 1=Musical=3 > 4. 2 really being the Empire Strikes Back linchpin lifting it out of generic kids movie mediocrity.

Only know this from trailers, but Kung Fu Panda does the "introduce more of the species in a later sequel when that really should have been established in the first one" thing too. I get that's the nature of making stories as sequels are approved, but it's weird Dreamworks has done it twice

Shrek 4. I don't like how everything was essentially a dream all along. I like that they introduce more ogres. Unsure how to feel about the hot ogre.

Shrek the Musical. Coulda done without some songs which were clearly padding out the time (2hrs vs the movies being 1.5 hrs), but it does introduce the Pied Piper and a larger focus on Fiona's trauma, which 4 takes a page out of. If 1 could be remade with some of these songs, it would be an upgrade

3 came out in 2007 and you can tell. Improved graphics, everything is suddenly framed to not be as easily pan-and-scan cropped. The blu-rayingest of the Shreks.

Shrek 3, aka the one with Justin Timberlake. It tries to be a more timeless thing, but so much of Shrek is about making pop culture references that age like milk. Literally had to double check the plot because I already forgot it.

I relate Shrek to pop culture references of that time, so it didn't bother me much. Was more annoyed at the "it ultimately didn't happen" nature of 4

Shrek 2: everything fun you remember from Shrek 1 is done way better and more prominently in 2. The Pokemon Gold/Silver of the Shrek. And also they figured out how to make human Fiona looks less like an NPC (1 vs 2)

Shrek 1: the skeleton of a better movie. Weird enough to stand out in 2001. Fiona looks like a Final Fantasy PS2 cutscene

Actually liked it more than 4. 2 still best by a long shot though

Spent the whole weekend with friends watching every Shrek. Didn't get to the Puss in Boots movies since we wanted to break up the pacing with some late night karaoke, but I think it's safe to say I now know far too much about Shrek than an aging millennial should

Hello, I've only ever watched the first Shrek back when it came out, so now I am overcorrecting.

I remember I found that War Game sequel movie by chance on Disney's Jetix block and was happy but confused since it was at least 5 years since the Digimon movie by that point.
