The thesis statement of this au is 'what if a power of friendship type magical girl meets a bunch of dark/deconstructive/'magic powers that eat your soul' type magical girls *and still manages to save the day*.

I cannot emphasize this enough: Yuma is meant to represent an archetypal power of friendship and hope magical girl in this au.

A snippet of a fanfiction. Text reads as follows: Before he can say anything else it all goes dark, Yuma's surroundings slamming from the bright colourful streets of Heartland to the dim clifftop and looming door that are so familiar from his dreams. He looks around, panic and desire to do *something* clawing at his guts as the door begins to speak. ***"He who opens the door shall obtain a new power. However, as the price for this power, you shall lose that which is most important to you."*** The voice of the door booms through Yuma's core, drawing his attention. Vaguely, in the back of his mind, he recalls Tetsuo and Kotori's warnings not to take any offers from it, and he knows he should just say no. Heck, maybe if he waits long enough he'll fall off the crumbling cliff behind him and snap back to reality, just like in the dreams. *But.* Yuma can't deny the desire to save Ryoga, despite his foul temper. He would never be able to live with himself if he let Ryoga *die* because of his own fear of what the door might take from him in exchange.

They fought fiercely, unafraid of the creatures they defended the city from and unshakable in their teamwork. Then, one day, the girl abruptly disappeared. Several weeks later, the boy seemingly snapped, attacking an innocent civilian for no clear reason. He vanished from the public eye soon after, his reputation shattered, and so Heartland was left defenceless against the Numbers.

-I needed a low level antagonist for the orphanage arc of the AU who could act as a recurring bully for Michael before the actual plot kicks in later. I *also* needed a character Michael could duel for Shark Drake (which I wanted to be the first featured Number), so he uses Mermails. ->
