Probably not going to be helpful in your case, but if you’re already using vscode in your project, maybe worth trying out cursor. The fact it lets you choose models is maybe interesting here. I’ve found it pretty versatile thanks to that.

How did you make music on a C64? That took not just understanding music theory, but understanding what exactly a note is. Granted, it doesn't help that Lftkyro makes typing in assembly in BASIC off the top of your head look simple.
