I thought maybe we'd flip to Dean looking sad and lonely in the Impala driving down the highway at night, or see John someone in some scary situation. It faked me out SO HARD that the trope completely *got* me. And I was utterly terrified.

Also, the first time I saw this in 2005 (before I ditched the series in the first season because it was too scary), I was totally unfamiliar with horror tropes and was relaxing along with Sam, totally not expecting something terrifying to happen so late in the episode.

I think I found early #Supernatural scary because we didn't know the rules. What *couldn't* the Yellow-Eyed Demon do? What were his limits? If he could get to Jess, he could get to anyone that Sam loved, anytime.
