The NSF Bio Anthro Program DDRIG, Cultural Anthrpology DDRIG, and Archaeology DDRIG have all been archived (as of yesterday afternoon). Please speak with your grad students and plan accordingly. To say I am angry and depressed about this is an understatement.

In Journal of Olympic Studies @jakewdean.bsky.social argues that the inability of the IOC to effectively amend its host city selection process & recruit suitable hosts for future Winter Olympics has resulted in an increasing reliance on fake snow. scholarlypublishingcollective.org/uip/jos/arti...

Sorry, but this is just littered with disinformation. This is an ideology that is responsible for the hollowing out of ecosystem function, resilience, and biodiversity around the world. Thinking like this doesn't solve the problem it (re)creates it.

This amazing collaborative event ethnography is (finally) out now! It was a privilege to collaborate with so many great ethnographers to tackle COP27 from many different perspectives, and I hope folks in environmental social sciences continue to apply the CEE model. OA coming soon!

Map showing the number of times a location has burned in SoCal and which kind of fire it was: one burning under Santa Ana winds, or one that was a summer, fuel-driven fire without Santa Ana winds. Malibu area had burned at least 8 times from 1900-2017, and has burned twice now since. Image from Kolden and Abatzoglou (2018): https://www.mdpi.com/2571-6255/1/2/19

Here's the reality about the #LAFires this week: this isn't the first time ANY of these places have burned. Not even close. In 2018, we mapped CA fire history to look at fire frequency across SoCal. Santa Monica Mtns area burns more than anywhere else -- up to once per decade in a given spot. 🧡

Another thing: in the race to cut fossil fuel use ASAPβ€”which we need to doβ€”be wary of "solutions" that increase emissions from land-use change (2nd-biggest human source of CO2) or of other major greenhouse gases (eg methane, nitrous oxide). This can happen in food/ag due to its reliance on land. 1/

At some point liberals are going to start saying, okay there was a genocide but it’s really the fault of the left for how annoying they were about pointing it out

Not the point of this thread, but β€œdo you think Trump’s win marks the defeat of identity politics” is SUCH a tell.

His win is an absolute VICTORY for identity politics.

If we accept that β€œangry white evangelical grievance” is an identity.

Which is ABSOLUTELY is. Thru and thru.

Episode 35: What’s the Matter with Kansas?

In 2004, Thomas Frank tried to unravel the mystery of poor Kansans who vote Republican. We dig into the great political mystery of our time: what’s up with white people?

Students should study the humanities not because it makes them better workers but because it rips you open and breaks your brain and changes everything you thought you knew. I *promise* you this. I *promise* it has this ability, no matter how smart you think you are. I have seen it countless times.

1. Thanks for having us at your lovely home.

2. This all tastes great, BTW did you know the food system accounts for 1/3 of global annual GHG emissions?

3. Conventional land use GHG accounting ignores that most agricultural land was cleared long ago, and overlooks the carbon opportunity costs of keeping that land in production,

I'm a sessional lecturer at UBC's School of Population & Public Health. I was recently informed that I would no longer be teaching in the school.

In April, I asked why the school would not sponsor & advertise an event related to Gaza w/ a speaker from the respected NGO Save the Children. 🧡
