When I learned econometrics in the Stone Age it was called Windsorizing the data. But blatant data mining was pretty common. Considered white lies? And I am not talking about experiments! Standards have improved.

I think this point by Deborah is key. The data colada team is b-school based and have raised standards for everyone. IMHO this article is well below the standard I expect from the Atlantic.
