Our report to City of York was approved by committee and the Council should be removing the first barriers now. Expect about 30 to be gone by early summer. They need to have removed enough by the Active City Conference in July to advertise their commitment to accessibility.
21.02.2025 09:17 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Hello Harrie. York Council asked us to review access control barriers in the city. The project manager was ken.spence@transport-initiatives.com (not on Blueshy) and a note on the project can be found here: transport-initiatives.com/york-access-.... There may be some synergy with your work.

14.02.2025 19:00 β π 7 π 2 π¬ 1 π 0A blue coloured cycle path snales alongside a road. The picture shows a pedestrian zebra crossing both road and cycle path. Tactile paving has been laid where the crossing and cycle path meet to guide visually impaired pedestrians onto the footway rather than the cycle path. Normally the ridges on 'tramline' paving should be straight but here they have cut the slabs and laid it as a curve.
At a recent Active Travel Design Course we give for the IHE tinyurl.com/28m28wdu we had a delegate from Gibraltar who gave us a tour of what they were doing. Hereβs a report page showing curved βtramlineβ tactile paving laid on a corner to reduce skid risk. Not as per guidance but interesting.

17.01.2025 20:41 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A graph showing how 'walkable' a car park, a high volume road, a low volume road and a cycle & pedestrian path are. In terms of how attractive a place is for walkability a car park scores 34%, the roads around 70% and a cycle or pedestrian path 100%.
In studies comparing what shopkeepers and their customers want, parking is rated much more highly by shopkepers than customers. Here's a paper, tinyurl.com/nz8we6dd, (albeit American) that shows how parking negatively affects walkability, which as really what the shopkeepers should be wanting.
