A 1944 map by geologist Harold Fisk charts a 40-mile stretch of the Mississippi River from Friars Point to Gunnison, Mississippi. We're at a point where there are no cheap options to retreat to and no price points that guarantee quality. Every run-down studio is $1400, every fast food meal is $17, every luxury condo has peel-n-stick tiles, every $300 pair of boots falls apart. Endless expensive mediocrity.

No interruptions, please. We’re building universal child care.

I’m glad someone said this to his face and more of these CEOs need to hear it: If the conversation around tech seems negative now it’s because you, your products, and what they’re doing to our society fucking sucks. You stopped making optimistic technology and unleashed MechaHitler the job killer.

I don't have any time for a morality that gets bent out of shape over what consenting adults do with each other, or what substance choices reasonably-well-informed adults make. But a sense of morality that says you should be a pariah if you do insider trading on war-action betting? Hell yeah

β€œEnshitification” did not emerge because customer satisfaction is soaring. It’s fucking Ferngully out here and we’re little jungle critters chased into smaller and smaller pens of detached territory by malevolent bulldozers of consumption.

very aspect of life in this country is designed so that people do not form bonds or relationships with other people, it's wild to watch in action. Never seen divide and conquer applied this rigorously to a domestic population that is not under foreign occupation

What his administration has ACTUALLY been doing is banning trans teens *who have the full support of their parents and doctors* from being able to even access non-surgical medical interventions. That's what all the administration's/GOP state bans do.

I will add one last thought. Many of the responses from Democratic lawmakers and liberal commentators (even the good ones) contain some ambivalence - some hope that perhaps the fall of the Iranian regime, even at the hands of Donald Trump, will be for the best. I understand why. I am the son of an Iranian immigrant. Ultimately I want freedom, democracy, and dignity for the Iranian people. The problem is that I've seen the American government promise all of those things a hundred times, and I've never seen them deliver it once.

Saw a thoughtful thread about AI, don't want to QT or argue. But. The biggest rage factor with LLMs is the people who, because genAI is transformative for coding, think it's transformative for everything else, because they devalue every other form of work and labor and knowledge.

This is what everyone should be worrying about. Not Trump canceling elections, but Republicans taking the trips they've been playing on everyone else and doing them to white voter precincts.

This thread is a painfully perfect description of how it will go down.

I think one of the things that bothers me the most about the way Polymarket presents itself to the world is that it's adopted the language of journalism to make itself sound more legitimate. Like look at this post from yesterday morning incorrectly "projecting" the winner.

Maybe - and I know this is so crazy - but maybe Democrats should just go out and campaign against Trump and his policies bc they are massively unpopular and start worrying more about being seen as insufficiently tough and less about how to be a somewhat Republicany Democrat. Just a thought.
