Stick-colored/textured orb weaver, being a lump on a twig
Side view, showing off the tall humped abdomen towering over her head, from which 1 of her eye pairs protrudes
Also last night I found another old friend I haven't seen in a couple years, an Ocrepeira orb weaver! A silly lump of a spider with a tall humped booty who loves to blend into Stick and I love them.

BioNames
After a few years of benign neglect I am rebuilding bionames.org, which is a database of 5.4 million taxonomomic names for animals, linked to half a million DOIs and 278K PDFs. Dream is for every species name to be linked to its original publication using a persistent identifier #PID

nine illustrations. from top left: a yellow mariposa flower, a golden beetle, a yellow sparrow, a spotted blue jellyfish, a brown spotted snake, an orange spotted fig, white mushrooms, a grey snail with a brown shell, and four pinkish pill-shaped bacteria
to highlight the fact that species epithets can repeat in separate genera, here are three species named "yellow", three named "spotted", and three named "from India". it took a while to come up with a nice spread of lifeforms

If you are a student whose NSF GRFP application was returned without review for vague 'eligibility' reasons:
1) Let your department chair & Graduate School know. Encourage them to contact NSF & congress
2) Write to your congressional reps.
3) Write to grfp@nsf.gov to request re-consideration;

The slide summarizes the meaning of 5 words:
-Chelicerata (="claw horn")
Arthropods with chelicerae (pincers/fangs front appendages) instead of antennae.
-Pycnogonida (="thick knee")
Marine chelicerates with slender bodies, proboscis, and ridiculously long legs.
-Arachnida (="spider")
Terrestrial chelicerates, including spiders, scorpions or mites to cite a few.
-Eurypterida (="wide fin/wing")
Extinct paleozoic aquatic chelicerates often called βsea scorpionsβ even tho they arenβt related at all.
-Xiphosura (="sword tail/body end")
The horseshoe crabs group, easily recognizable with their wide cephalothorax and pointy telson.
Today for #Cheliceratime, a bit of etymology! We are used to certain names, but what did they mean in the first place?
If you want to learn more, read bellow! β¬οΈ
