Beyond that, the next thing for me, will be to engage with ways to acknowledge, respond to, and use LLM tools in ways that are validating of human expertise (while also acknowledging cases that are not)

Would be one way of addressing this moment by pushing back against tendencies to over-rely on LLMs

For teaching... To the extent that embrace of LLMs and chatbots are predicated on expectations for hiring... Developing narratives that insist on the value of human expertise and identify pathways to careers based on that expertise...

Career fairs, personal referrals, hiring pathways and history that develops in clubs and research labs... simultaneously acknowledging that these narrower pathways can perpetuate bias and exclusion and also acknowledging that treating automation in hiring as a panacea dehumanizes everyone.

Things like seeking earnestly to develop specialized and valued experience (via credentials, clubs, projects)... Mechanisms grounded in human networks and interaction that bypass automated evaluation...

So, facing crises in hiring---and thinking now also about students who have come to me asking for advice in a difficult job market (and having little to give)---I would seek mechanisms that embrace humanity vs. leaning into dehumanizing mechanisms....

To start off, I have and will continue to come at this from the perspective of insistence on the value and validity of human experience and expertise i.e. insisting on value of specialized human knowledge vs. tendency of "AI bros" to ignore that experience when entering a new domain

I have developed some avoidance on LLMs+education and this feels like a point I can build off of.

And, the perverse incentive this creates for students to adopt AI/LLMs and to become that "AI First" person this system demands... potentially to detriment of their own learning.

Specifically, responding to comments on hiring... AI increasingly integrated into decisions, evaluating applications or even performing interviews... and the dehumanizing effect that has

In an environment where framing often comes as a choice to lean in or to resist this felt like a start at considering and addressing circumstances created by AI.

I can't even begin to describe just how fucked up this law is. People cannot drive to work, to school, or even the DMV to fix this without the threat of being arrested for driving on a suspended license. It literally removes the ability for trans Kansans to participate in society.

Kansas lawmakers bypassed the committee process by doing a whole bill amendment and pushing this in two days. They then overrode the governors veto. They used emergency designation to make it go into effect immediately. There's no grace period. The amount of targeted animus here is staggering.
