The Wild Elephant in the Room
Conservationists seeking to restore elephant populations in a Malawian national park inadvertently upended human lives, revealing the risks of large-mammal translocations.
After 263 African elephants were moved from one national park to another, the animals began wandering out - destroying property and killing people. My latest for @biographic.bsky.social, on the complexities of conservation in an increasingly crowded continent.

Nurses To Picket At Major South SF Hospital, Protesting Layoffs And A.I. In Medical Care
Union nurses will protest outside 22 facilities across California, claiming the hospitals are putting profits and politics before patients.
βInstead of looking to these untested technologies being pushed by corporate executives, Kaiser management should be working with us to ensure that issues like safe staffing and wage theft arenβt impacting patients and nurses.β

Tenderloin senior center struggling with running out of food for people
This year's billionaire's budget defunded people's basic needs. $3 million from the Dignity Fund means seniors go hungry. It's unconscionable.

This is what I explore in my newest book INTO THE RAPIDS. Itβs a survival story, but itβs also about how thereβs more to life than just survival."

Federal court says copyrighted books are fair use for AI training
Anthropic didnβt break the law when it trained its chatbot with copyrighted books, a judge said, but it must go to trial for allegedly using pirated books.
I once had a fight with my publisher's lawyer over what constitutes "fair use." He said reprinting 4 lines of a poem without the poet's explicit permission was too much. But AI gobbling up whole books now counts as "fair use." Something is definitely wrong with US copyright law.

Screenshot of article excerpt: The Education Department also was concerned about other words in the application, said Adrian Klenz, who works with deafblind adults in the state. He said he has talked with state officials about the discontinuation of the grant.
βI was told that apparently the administration is going through past grants and two words were flagged: One was transition and one was privilege,β Klenz said. βTransition β transitioning from childhood to adulthood. Privilege came up because a parent wrote a glowing review of staff that said what a privilege it was to work with them.β ProPublica obtained a copy of the grant application and confirmed that those words were included.
The Dept. of Education has pulled funding for programs in 8 states that support students with both hearing and vision loss.
A staffer at one program says he was told the Trump admin. took issue with 2 words on the grant application: βtransition" and βprivilege": www.propublica.org/article/trum...

3. Don't like a book, don't read it
4. Let other people read what they want
