Motorists in cities create barriers for people. They move with a sense of entitlement and intimidate even when being respectful.

This brilliant campaign from Quebec shows exactly what it takes to get motorists to actually yield. We have to prioritize human lives and safety over vehicular momentum.

Tonight Critical Mass Seattle rode in honor of Lilliana Moreno, who was killed by a car at the intersection of Pine and Bellevue in Capitol Hill a week and a half ago. We rode out and held vigil at the intersection before continuing on. Our friends and neighbors should not die on our streets.

Is that closed or obstructed?

Closure would imply a plan and a detour. That looks more like a careless obstruction.

@seattledot.bsky.social had the option to do the bare minimum (install, or demand the property owner install, wheel stops to prevent encroachment by parked cars) when they repaved Nickerson...but they declined.

Please keep in mind wayfinding will still be incredibly important so people clearly know how to navigate around the closure when flaggers aren’t present.

A message from the Seattle Waterfront:

A segment of the waterfront bike lane will be closed near Pier 62 as early as February 25.

SFD should immediately get behind physically “daylighting” every fire hydrant in the city.

Both are likely true. I asked the Westlake Park project team if they could move the new bollards they are installing to the north end of the park to the north side of the bike lane on Pine, and they said it was impossible due to the tunnel being so shallow.

@seattledot.bsky.social can we get a status update on WO 1214121 to restore the planter buffer positioning on the SW corner of Pine & 5th (in front of Allsaints)?

Drivers continue to use the bike lane as parking/loading.

It’s a significant improvement. How do we keep it regularly maintained?

It looks like it’s been knocked out of out of position by 6” already, and the bike right of way is under the minimum 4’ standard.

There are other options, and we are actively looking at them with SDOT.

Yeah, a 5’ vehicle lane would likely be restored to its standard 10’ width within hours.

@seattledot.bsky.social has a 24 Hour Response Team for just this issue, but they don’t seem to look at bike lanes as transportation lanes, or give them the same mobility and safety prioritization.

We’re talking to SDOT about some near term options that would allow a wide stable bike buffer without disturbing the Sacred Westlake Brinks™️.

Yes, busses and trucks are bumping into it and nudging it out of position inch by inch. This is about 3 weeks worth of nudges.

@seattledot.bsky.social the temporary bike safety barrier at Pine & 4th is now 23” out of position, reducing the effective bike right of way to less than 2’ wide.

Can we get an update on when WO #1214107 is scheduled to restore it? It’s been out of position for 3+ weeks.

I believe that Director’s Rule only applies to pedestrian detours. We need an equivalent rule for bike facilities, and it needs to apply to events, not just construction.

This is a heartbreaking failure in the WA LEG.

It would have made it easier for those harmed by negligent drivers to seek a remedy. It passed the House just HOURS after Lili Moreno was killed by a driver in Capitol Hill.

Too often, our laws protect dangerous drivers more than the people they kill.
