β€œToni Cade Bambara gave us the quote, β€œAs a culture worker who belongs to an oppressed people, my job is to make revolution irresistible.”

I define myself as a cultural organizer. And in this moment, I think culture work is what saves us. Culture is how we be. Art is the evidence of how we be.”

New Durham Bar Has 13 Seats, No Wifi, and a Lot of Charm Soif, which opens at 331 West Main Street in early March, will serve coffee during the day and flip to serving spritzers at night.

Gerstl says he modeled Soif after coffee bars where he grew up, in Italy, where the bar is the center of the community and β€œeveryone starts their day standing at the counter talking about sports or politics or whatever’s going on around town.”

I’m proud of pieces like this bc their specificity is reflective of spending considered time with the material - it’s easy to project a narrative on Southern writing, esp when it involves a family legacy. This feature is beautifully true to Council’s wistful voice and elegant placemaking.

In New Cookbook, Spring Council Brings Back a Lost Chapel Hill 'Southern Roots' offers recipes from Spring Council's legendary mother alongside memories of the close-knit neighborhood she grew up in.

Lena’s story on Spring Council’s cookbook-meets-memoir is such a pleasure:

β€œBeyond lost places, Southern Roots has a way of capturing lost ways of eating. Council grew up with an intimacy to her food sources that has largely vanished.”
