The reality of the problem looks more like this hearing, replayed in jurisdictions all across the country:

We're all volunteers here at Central Oregon YIMBY. Seeing how bad the housing shortage is and how many people it hurts is what keeps us motivated.

New from MAP: the research is clear β places that build more homes see the biggest rent relief for low-income tenants.

Via the "Mortgage Interest Deduction", Oregon subsidizes vacation homes and other second homes
Government subsidies are best directed towards people who need help, rather than the already wealthy.

We're working on updating from Bend YIMBY to Central Oregon YIMBY. The new name works a lot better for someone from, say, Redmond, Madras or La Pine to turn up at their city council meeting.
We expect there may be a few hiccups, so please bear with us!

2025 in review for Bend YIMBY. It was a rough year in a lot of ways, but a pretty good one for housing.

The front page of the local paper has an article about middle housing - with a quote from @andersem.bsky.social and one of our @yimbyaction.bsky.social chapter leads, Ryan. As well as an article about single stair reform. Not bad!

βWhile immigrants do add to overall housing demand, they cannot be blamed for the recent surge in home prices and rents... trends in interest rates and the pandemic-induced demand for housing were mostly responsible," says our managing director Dr. Chris Herbert.

23.11.2025 20:51 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Or not? McDermitt was there before the state was formed and clearly no one there cared enough to realign it to the border. It is a curiosity regardless. Check it out in person and be sure to visit Rome on the way!
21.11.2025 15:26 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0If you follow your map east or west it shows occasional zigs and zags, which is probably the correction needed at fine scale to make the line straight on a big scale. That it does that in a town may represent the mapping program wanting to follow typical man made borders?
21.11.2025 15:23 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It does not. The border is the geographic parallel and the town straddles it. There used to be a bar there that was split by the line. Orders were placed on the Oregon side to avoid NV sales tax.
20.11.2025 14:49 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0If you want larger homes in urban areas to be available and affordable to young families then you need to build a LOT of studio and one-bedroom apartments. Otherwise, groups of adult roommates will outbid them for the 2- and 3-bedroom units in walkable neighborhoods.

More to the substance of Addisonβs post, I lived in a shared 5 bedroom house for much of my 20s. It was mostly great, except for the neighbor who called the cops on us every day for 6 weeks after we built a skateboard ramp in the back yard until they told him we werenβt breaking the noise ordinance.
