I'm quite proud of what is happening with housing in Oregon.

This July, we launched Oregon’s Housing Accountability and Production Office (HAPO) to help local governments and builders work together to meet housing goals and build more affordable homes. This is a step forward in solving our housing crisis.

I think of the housing shortage as a giant, billion-dollar, industrial scale machine that produces homeless faster than the people trying to help can get people out of homelessness

Supportive anecdata: since I got my new e-bike three months ago, I've put nearly 900 miles on it and roughly 25 miles on our car.

And said drivers are more often than not driving their kids to school.

Swimming in the waters of U.S. NIMBYism it’s like omg the NIMBYism couldn’t possibly be worse.

But then you look at land use policy in all the other Anglosphere countries and it’s mostly a lot worse!

On the west coast, this is a housing problem, not a desirability problem.

Great to see but locally we still seem to have a divide where many elected officials continue to blame the issues on the people forced out rather than the policies we created that made housing so unobtainable in the first place.

The source for this, the problem of believing perceptions rather than facts, is fascinating and depressing. Certainly plays into our issues of housing and homelessness.

In 2020, Portland adopted the Residential Infill Project (RIP) allowing middle housing on most residential lots. Since then, 1,400 middle housing units have been built, with each averaging about $300,000 less than a typical single-family home in the same neighborhood.

Funny that most of the worst traffic jams in our city are when parents are playing Pikov Andropov around our schools.

It is amazing that in only a few decades developers erased the long-held belief that the ‘big parts’ of one’s life (work, school, necessities) should be convenient - by proximity to one’s home.

There was a discussion last night where a data nerd we know was saying it would be exceptionally difficult to prove that a specific zoning change or building type would directly correlate to a value reduction. Because . . . data. That said plenty believe it would be true.

You can blame the mass destruction of their cocoon habit every year by well meaning homeowners. In the fall leave the leaves!

Got them last week on Long Island. Such a delight.

And it’s wielded by people like a cudgel toward folks that aren’t really any different than their ancestors who immigrated here for much the same reasons.

Oregon's legislature just passed HB 2138, removing remaining barriers to starter homes:

- up to 4 homes on all urban lots, attached or detached in any combo
- up to 6 homes with accessibility or affordability
- simpler lot splits
- strikes bans on such housing out of pre-2019 HOA rules
