Born to Puerto Rican parents in Queens, NY, Defendini saw firsthand the realities of gentrification and the anxieties of being unable to afford rent. He was also deeply steeped in radical politics through his work campaigning for Representative AOC during her primary campaign in his hometown.

Smith obtained a Masters in Public Administration from SUNY Brockport College. She worked for 25 years at the Monroe County Department of Public Health. Smith ran on the “Peoples Slate” of the Rochester City Council.

🗃️ Socialist of the Day: Richie Floyd is a Florida politician and a councilmember on the St. Petersburg City Council. Elected in 2021, Floyd is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and is the first socialist elected in Florida since 1906.

Floyd is a science teacher, community activist, and engineer with experience leading organizing campaigns for $15 minimum wage, criminal justice reform, and more. He is an active union member and has fought alongside his coworkers and other unions to demand for better conditions for working people.

🗃️ Socialist of the Day: Mariam Khan is a Connecticut politician who serves on the Hamden Board of Education. Khan is a member of the DSA and ran alongside Abdul Osmano and Justin Farmer on the Central Connecticut DSA Slate. Their campaign was nicknamed JAM (Justin, Abdul, Mariam).

He is a graduate of Hamden Public Schools and ran on resisting gentrification, investing in infrastructure programs, and community-driven public safety

🗃️ Socialist of the Day: Shenise Turner-Sloss is an Ohio politician and the mayor-elect of Dayton, Ohio after winning the non-partisan 2025 election against incumbent Jeff Mims. She became the Dayton City Commissioner in 2021. Turner-Sloss is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

In 1911, two socialist aldermen and three socialist assessors won their elections, in 1913, Dayton changed the City Manager plan, shutting socialists out. Turner-Sloss became the first open socialist elected to Dayton City Commission in 110 years.

🗃️ Socialist of the Day: Gabriella Romero is a New York politician who currently serves in the State Assembly. She previously served on the Albany’s Common Council. Romero is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and won her seat in 2024. She won election to the Albany council in 2021.

Romero was born to Puerto Rican parents both lifelong, unionized state workers. She is was employed at the Albany County Public Defender’s Office as a trial attorney and local court advocate.

Prior to their election, Conley-Wilson was a community organizer and food justice gardener. In their spare time they run Common Greens Garden, a community garden in North Central Troy. Currently, they serve as New York Regional Program Coordinator for the American Farmland Trust.

She is the eldest daughter from a Muslim immigrant family. Prior to her election win, Chughtai worked as a political organizer for Service Employees International Union, managed the campaign for Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, and helped found the Muslim Caucus of the Young Democrats of America.
