Did you have a mortgage and kids in 2008 though? Not having kids and/or owning property *completely* changes the equation in those kinds of market crashes. Getting laid off in your mid 20s is a breeze compared to later in life when you have more serious financial obligations.

An estimated 6-10 million people lost their homes in the great financial crisis of the 2000s. Not that I’d expect them to but younger people really can’t grasp how bad the economy crashed.

I’m old enough to have to lived through the dot com crash and the great recession and it was a bloodbath. Millions of people got laid off and had no income, and their investments tanked and they ended up losing their homes. Nasty times.

You can sell the CD before it matures. You might have to pay a penalty of 3-6 months of interest but you can redeem the CD prior to maturity and get the principal back if you need to.

And there are a ton of people who have taken losses in mutual funds.

If you have 6-12 months of living expenses set aside in an emergency fund and the market tanks + you get laid off and can’t find a new job for a while you’ll be extremely happy that money was in a CD and not a mutual fund. But yes, for long term investing CDs aren’t great 👍🏻

Broadly speaking CDs are a good vehicle for money set aside in an emergency fund or if you’re saving up for a house or a big purchase
