Nova Scotia universities required to justify each program for continued funding as international student enrollment drops N.S. academia is facing a potential shakeup as the provincial government demands universities review and justify each of their programs.

Sigh. www.saltwire.com/nova-scotia/....

β€œWe don’t have endless pockets.”

Maybe not, but you do appear to be contributing to past provincial surpluses by flatlining transfers or citing β€œincreases” well under inflation. Eroding investment has led to the present crisis, and poor labour relations.

Screen capture of a portion of an Acadia press release that reads: The negotiating teams revised 39 articlesβ€” 74% of the collective agreement β€”and created seven Memorandums of Agreement (MOA). Negotiators met 21 days at the table from May 6 to August 8 this year, and settled amicably at the table on August 8.

β€œThe two teams did a tremendous amount of work in a relatively short period of time and reached an agreement without a need for outside intervention.” says Anthony Pash, AUFA Lead Negotiator. β€œWe thank the Board’s team for their hard work and willingness to engage in productive debate, and we hope that this is the model for negotiations going forward.”

Reading this release (www2.acadiau.ca/about-acadia...) makes me even more angry at the process we just endured. Acadia demonstrated both sides can commit to not only maintaining relationships but strengthening them. For me, relationships feel fractured and repair will take time.

A wee thread 🧡: Everyone I spoke to at Dalhousie today was upset by the president’s β€œshort Friday note”: faculty, staff, students, unionized or no.

The main reason? 1/6

It's interesting that anyone would be surprised by this. They are large language models, not large fact models. They are very good at language; it's unsurprising that they aren't terribly good at facts.

Yes, it was Toronto … but the gap was nearly $2000 a course. Almost 10 years have passed. I have a career stream faculty position thankfully. Because the current stipends per course at Dalhousie are still less in 2025 than I received in 2016 from TMU. 2/2

In the 2015-2016 academic year I taught 10 courses as a CUPE3904 sessional lecturer at TMU (formerly Ryerson). I came to Dalhousie on a 50% FTE limited term appointment and was taken aback at how far behind the local @cupe3912.bsky.social stipends were compared to 3904. 1/2
