It's Book Quote Wednesday and the word is UNBELIEVABLE, though I've had to go with DISBELIEF. Ted struggles with kleptomania, all part of the Thief's plan to rule the world. #kleptomania #yafantasy #bookqw www.benjeapes.com/index.php/th...

Cover art by Ben Baldwin shows a creature crouching in a low tunnel entrance lined with grey stones and partly hidden by green undergrowth and white flowers. The creature has pale skin covered in sparse black hair and it looks a bit like an ape, a bit like a bear, and completely unlike either of those.

Book extract reads: The copper wrote everything down and looked up. โ€˜Please can you tell me exactly what happened here this afternoon?โ€™
That was easy enough. โ€˜We arrived a bit after five. Weโ€™ve rented the place for a weekโ€™s holiday. We were having a cup of tea when we heard a noise out the back. When we opened the door, there was a baby on the step.โ€™ Saying that out loud, it did sound hard to believe.
โ€˜What sort of noise did you hear?โ€™ The policeman looked at me intently. โ€˜Voices? Footsteps? A car?โ€™
โ€˜Nothing.โ€™ I shook my head. โ€˜Sorry. I meant we heard the baby crying.โ€™
โ€˜Nothing else?โ€™ he persisted.
I took a moment to think through everything again. โ€˜No. Thatโ€™s all there was. Sorry.โ€™
He should hear I was telling the truth. Fin would be saying exactly the same. I could hear low voices inside, even if I couldnโ€™t make out her words. It was obvious these coppers had separated us to find out if our stories matched. I didnโ€™t have to worry about that. But why had a baby been dumped on our doorstep? Who the hell had done this, and why? Now I was over the initial shock, I was getting uneasy.

The truth had given me nightmares. I dreamt of the floor falling away from me, slipping sideways, as the walls cracked and parted. The faces of my friends, as panicked as I was, all of us helpless to arrest our fall. Horrible sounds as entire rooms collapsed inwards. Screams. I grabbed at a banister, for all the good it did. I turned my head upwards, hoping that some miracle could save us, but there was no time for anyone to conjure up a Song. A strange moment of relief when I saw my room-mate on the cistern level, safe, abruptly shattered when a chunk of masonry slammed into him from above. When we had no more breath to scream, the sound of the wind in our ears made us deaf, anyway. We dropped into the mist, the fractured pieces of tower clearing a way before us. Further we plunged, sinking a well into the orange clouds. We fell for so long that the mist rolled back over the top of the clear area, taking away the sun.

For #BookQW here's a fragment of a nightmare from Eilert's perspective, as he remembers old fears.

I looked up at the looming grey vessels, casting shadows over the high-rise buildings. There was nowhere to run. We had a day. Just one day.
But that was enough for my mission.
I had to kill my mother.
I kept moving eastward. Abandoned vehicles littered the streets. It looked like an ordinary Ahmedabad traffic jam, except there were no horns beeping, no one shouting. Already the streets were largely devoid of the living. It was only by their absence that I noticed them: no fresh animal excrement, no sweaty humans jostling for space, no exhaust fumes, no street vendors selling roasted peanuts, or chai-wallahs serving endless cups of cutting-tea. But there were still looters, fanatics who refused to give up their homes, and several others with their own reasons. Like me.

Then I told Porter that Iโ€™d have no unkenned doings on any property of mine, and,โ€™ he added through his teeth, โ€˜Porter said that the cat was a good beast and he begged me not to hurt it, that his children loved it and it was a fine hunter and I should consider the safety of my stores from mice. And then the animal said that the mice were all very well but that it was no common hireling and would catch coneys if it chose, and that it dearly loved a fine fat haunch fed on grass, such as noblecats should eat.โ€™ Dislike of the grotesquerie was stiffening Ephraimโ€™s every line, but evidently his memory of this politically minded mogโ€™s opinions was rather good.
John was bouncing up to ask more on the subject, but at this point there was a knock upon the jamb.

Book extract reads: โ€˜Do you know if the pub does food?โ€™ She pointed across the village green. โ€˜The George and Dragon?โ€™
One of the other two replied, โ€˜I donโ€™t think the dining room will be open, not this evening. The police are using it.โ€™
โ€˜Really?โ€™ Fin managed to sound suitably startled. โ€˜Why?โ€™
The first girl looked disappointed. โ€˜You havenโ€™t heard?โ€™
โ€˜Weโ€™re on holiday,โ€™ Fin apologised. โ€˜We only arrived this afternoon.โ€™
โ€˜Someone snatched a baby from a house at the other end of the village.โ€™ The second girl jerked her head, indicating the main road behind us.
โ€˜Itโ€™s all right though,โ€™ the third girl said quickly. โ€˜Theyโ€™ve found her. Sheโ€™s back home with her mum and dad.โ€™
The local social networks were impressively quick if they already had that news. How soon would word spread that Fin and I were somehow involved? Other people in Pigeon Lane must have seen the police cars arrive, and the coppers talking to us. Theyโ€™d have seen the screaming baby being carried out of the cottage. How long before someone shared what we looked like or posted a photo? Weโ€™d be instantly recognisable in a place this small.

Cover art by Ben Baldwin for The Green Man's Heir shows a carved wooden face made from oak leaves, with a spark of emerald light in the dark eye sockets.

Book extract reads: Where the hell was Tila? Was she deep in the woods, still fascinated as the police searched for clues? Could she have upped and left, furious at this upheaval ruining the peace of her valley? Maybe sheโ€™d gone back to wherever sheโ€™d come from. That would be another kick in the teeth if she had. I hadnโ€™t had a chance to find out where that dryad grove might be.
But would a dryad abandon her beloved trees because a human died, even if it was a violent death? It would be a fleeting event by the standards of their long lives, and the first murder hadnโ€™t driven her away.
Iโ€™d ring home first thing in the morning. Mum would have something to say about that. Iโ€™d better remember to warn Dad as well, in case that keen little copper did ring up to ask about me phoning him. Weโ€™d better agree what the hell we were supposed to have been talking about.
Tense with exasperation by the time I got back to the flat, I fell into bed, only to toss and turn for what felt like hours before finally falling asleep.
