Toxic masculinity isn’t a concern here, and we don’t view empathy as toxic. For centuries, adult males have huddled together, protecting the colony’s most vulnerable, giving their future a chance amidst the raging storms that threaten them.

The effort began when retired Navy commander William Marks, a 1996 Naval Academy graduate and former spokesperson for the Defense Intelligence Agency, launched a fundraiser April 5 to purchase the books for the students. Marks said he viewed the Navy’s decision to remove the books, which included fiction and nonfiction, as a first step toward cultivating a new generation of military leaders more loyal to individual political leaders than the U.S. Constitution.

“These are dedicated young men and women who we’re trusting, some within a few months, to go out and lead our Navy and lead the Marine Corps,” Marks said. “I think this is about suppressing knowledge, erasing history and limiting opportunities for education.”

Local people in Annapolis are making books removed from the Naval Academy's library available to students. Here's what one of them, a retired Navy commander, said about it. Give him another medal for service to his country.

The military is frequently accused of preparing to fight the last war, but the US military doesn’t even do that anymore. It just fights the same battles over and over again. It’s a completely astrategic institution.
