Aeragar is my homebrew TTRPG world. Using sites like World Anvil, Hero Forge and Inkarnate; I’ve been (slowly) crafting the world since September 2022.

I imagine though that gangs and other unsavoury groups use the inner caverns of the plateau to smuggle things, people, etc to/from The Vale and Ouros Coast. Without proper guides this would be dangerous due to cave ins and whatever creatures live within.

Now for the Tehraak Plateau:

Three Runs is built right up against this large plateau and mines it for precious gems and ores of all kind. These mining operations make the top of the plateau unsuitable for city building as it is prone to sink holes.

Some more fun naming tidbits abt Three Runs:

Three Runs can allude to the three major roads that run to/from the city.

Three Runs actually signifies the three warring kingdoms (human vs elf & dwarf) that called for a cease fire leading to the founding of the city.

So to summarize Three Runs in a contextual sense; it’s basically fantasy Vegas. The city is all about commerce, entertainment and luxury (or the appearance of luxury at least)

It’s got the richest of the rich right next to the poorest of the poor.

Initially Three Runs was going to just be a backwater desert town. But as I started to build up the town, it’s lore and it’s economics I realized it wouldn’t make sense for it to just be some small town. So I turned it into a medium-size city w it’s own guard force, govt, etc.

Three Runs got its name from the game Wildermyth. The game randomly generates names and for whatever reason Three Runs was one of the towns that just stuck in my head.

The city also was lightly inspired by WoW’s Crossroads town in that I wanted it to be a major choke point for the continent.

Region Spotlight: Nuuvar Canyon & the Tehraak Plateau.

Funnily enough the city here, Three Runs, was officially the first thing I ever made in Aeragar. I remember years ago I watched a video of Matt Mercer saying he basically started Exandria by starting with a small town.

I purposely left this area blank because I imagine It’s an outpost/staging area for some Drow/Dark Orc (HB orc subspecies) forces.

The dwarves are probably the least fleshed out kingdom of Karnak atm so I don’t have much BTS for them just yet!

With that said, for the dwarves I imagine there’d be a recent increase in Underdark threats; (Drow, duergar, trolls, etc). With the dwarves being closer to the Underdark they’d notice this first.

Which would cause their leadership to suspect something is afoot with the Underdark societies.

I’m also a Drow fanboy and hate how they’re always just “evil” in every game so you either can’t play them or have every NPC hate you because you’re playing one.

Orcs tho, the elves of The Vale don’t take kindly to orcs. They don’t outright hate them but are very distrustful.

With The Vale I wanted to have that typical elven forestland with a little less arrogance. Imagine WoW NEs if they didn’t think they were holier than thou.

Which is why I opted for a more open civilization of elves. They mainly just want to live in their forest in peace.

The city is home to elves of all races, even Drow. Though the Drow population is small and consists mainly of refugees and runaways from The Underdark.

The leaders of Avaedaril believe in unity of all elves so they promote the worship of Lunaris to rehabilitate their Drow brethren.

The elven capital, Avaedaril, is a large metropolis in the centre of The Vale. Avaedaril is the economic hub of the region. It is usually the first place travellers and caravans stop when coming from the north.

Being elves the city is lush and full of gardens and trees.

Part of Sash’Haeril is under the water, as seen by the bridge and spire in the ocean. And the other part is on land. The city was constructed as a sort of embassy to both elven societies.

The elves here share knowledge and magics with each other to better each’s people.

The dwarves of The Vale remain largely underground and in the mountains, so they don’t take up much land, leaving majority of the region for the elves.

On the western coast of The Vale is Sash’Haeril, a joint city of surface elves and sea elves.

I imagine Daelsboro is a remnant of an outpost from the Vale-Ouros War. After the war the elves allowed the town to remain unrazed as it was home to children and families. Over time Daelsboro developed its own identity.

In fact, there is a small town in The Vale called Daelsboro with humans and all other races of people living there. The town is not part of the elven kingdom, so does not receive aide from the elves. The elves are ambivalent at worst and cordial at best towards Daelsboro.

Region Spotlight: The Verdant Vale

The north most region of the continent, this your typical temperate forest where elves, dwarves, halflings, etc live. Now, The Vale is home to a large elven kingdom, but the populace isn’t entirely elvish. The elves just happen to be who settled there first.

Anyways, the main kingdom in the book is a lot like Rome, and their city is built on the corpse of a dead god. Hence where I got the idea for Karnak’s creation myth.

I do know that the “god’s corpse becoming a continent” idea stemmed from a book series called Nevernight. The book is set in a world that has 2 suns (maybe 3?) so it’s literally never night except for every ~13yrs when the suns set for a week or something. It’s been awhile since I’ve read the books.

As for the continent’s map itself, I honestly don’t know if I alrdy came up w the creation myth of the landmass being the corpse of a fallen god or if I noticed the land mass looked like a body lying on its back and retconned it. Either way I love those kind of ideas so I ran w it.

Most notable MENA inspos are with the Saraat Expanse and Nuuvar Canyon. Both areas being the most arid regions of the map and having a fallen kingdom (in the Saraat Expanse) with mystical ruins dotting the desert landscape.

📑 Design notes & inspo for Karnak:

The name Karnak is from the Temple of Karnak in Egypt. I felt this name was fitting as the continent is an arid/sub-tropical one with several ancient fallen kingdoms. I’ve always love Egyptian history and myth and wanted to inject some of that into Karnak.

The large island southeast of The Ouros Coast is known colloquially as Snake Island. It is rumoured to house a dormant civilization of snake people.

When the human refugees arrived in The Coast they assisted the natives with pushing the snake-folk out of the mainland.

To the far west of Karnak is the wholly volcanic island known as God's Head. No one lives here, due to the active volcano that takes up around 90% of the land mass. It is believed that the island is home to a doorway to the plane of fire.

The people of the Saraat Dynasty were able to contain the corruption seeping from the dark tree by constructing magical barriers around the region of Gaadsfel. In current times The Fel is not known to be inhabited by anyone or thing with a semblance of humanity.

Centuries ago a great reckoning sundered the land of Gaadsfel. The void orc capital of Gaadsgrave was said to have been pulled into the void and in its place, a massive, twisted tree sprouted. From this tree seeped dark energies that twisted the land and remaining inhabitants.

Instead of martial prowess, the void orcs of the Akarash Order valued arcane and intellectual gains. Their civilization was regularly in league with demons and aberrations of The Abyss and Far Realms. These Faustian relationships would be the ruination of the land.

The fourth region, The Fel, is a desolate wasteland home to twisted creatures and magics. Before its desolation, the region was known as Gaadsfel. Once a lush land, as Gaadsfel, it housed the Akarash Order, a kingdom of void orcs.
