Dr. Emily Ireland’s paper examines “Legal Personhood and Subordination Under the English Common Law, 1689-1760”. Using an intersectional analysis, the paper pays attention to those whose legal status was modified in some way, e.g. married women, children, enslaved people and the mentally unwell.

From 1793 to 1815, war captivity displaced thousands globally, including soldiers, enslaved people, and civilians. Dr. Anna McKay’s paper “Prisoners’ progress: imperial circulations of war captives 1793-1815” examines underutilised archives to offer a new framework for understanding war captivity.
