My brother and I overheard the exchange, enjoyed it and laughed about it later.

The following year we both said we loved the brandy in the white sauce.

Every year, we have white sauce with our Christmas pudding. It’s just an ordinary white sauce, a béchamel that has been sweetened with sugar.
