Clinical psychological scientist at U of Rochester with interests in depression, life stress, interpersonal factors, daily processes, clinical affective science. Mom of 2. Probably tired right now. Opinions my own
Google Scholar metrics thinks that Frontiers in Psychology is the #1 journal in psychology, lol

We arrange recs into βBest Practicesβ, βAcceptableβ & βNot Recommended Under Most Circumstances.β
Our goal is not to create impossible standards, or to shame prior work, but to build a template for the next generation of SG researchers to strive for a more rigorous and transparent literature
Expert consensus guidelines, widely used in other fields, are underutilized in clinical psych.
Together, we devised recommendations in 6 content areas:
Stressor Operationalization
Stressor Assessment
Longitudinal Design
Statistical Analysis
Openness & Transparency
Avoiding Stigmatizing Language
As an author & reviewer in this space, Iβve longed for a publication that spelled out standards for how to study stress generation. But any one researcherβs opinion is susceptible to idiosyncratic biases. So I contacted some of the best SG researchers in the field to form a panel.
30.07.2025 17:44 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Life stress is a funky variable to model as a DV.
It can be construed as formative.
Itβs hard to assess (correctly).
Itβs infinitely heterogeneous.
But methodological practices in the lit vary widely. Methods choices matter: they moderate (perhaps inflate) effect sizes in 3 meta-analyses.

The stress generation model suggests that risk for depression raises likelihood that people engage in behaviors that promotes stressful experiences.
Decades of research support it, including recent meta-analyses.

After nearly 2 years of debating and redrafting, the preprint is out:
Towards Next-Generation Stress Generation Research: Expert Consensus Methodological Guidelines

29.07.2025 14:24 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In March @veravine.bsky.social and I organized a Clinical Affective Science preconference at SAS, focused squarely on the intersection of all of these things. It's not confirmed yet if it will be back in 2026 in Pittsburgh- stay tuned!
Either way, SAS is fun. As is SRP! Those are my post-ABCT homes
I don't love having phones omnipresent in schools! I don't mind having a few more rules to prevent educational distractions. But let's not pretend this overreaching law will help mental health! I wish there was more investment in evidence-based policies rather than pseudoscientific moral panics.
15.07.2025 14:11 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I can think of so many ways that this will cause problems, and since it's a law, the teachers and administrators have their hands tied-- it's totally inflexible.

I'm not going to repost any of the insane antisemitic conspiracy bullshit that grok is spewing today, but it highlights how absolutely essentially is that we not let LLMs become a form of epistemic grounding for our society.

Facebook post by Katie Couric on the forced resignation of UVA President Jim Ryan
"...sadly, this seems to be a last ditch attempt by Virginia Governor [Glenn] Youngkin to resuscitate his floundering presidential ambitions by proving he is the chief destroyer of DEI." - @katiecouric.bsky.social bluevirginia.us/2025/06/uva-...
27.06.2025 22:03 β π 253 π 79 π¬ 10 π 10It is unreal that anyone would be put in a position like this by the government of the United States of America. Mourning for my alma matter, and for my country.
27.06.2025 22:24 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This is a watershed moment.
Everyone who benefits from higher education should be deeply concerned.
Ryan was a moderate who presided over one of the more conservative institutions of higher education.
He followed the law when it comes to DEI. But that wasn't enough. Trump demands absolute fealty.
they want to force UVAβs president to resign because he thinks it would be bad if the university reverted to being a lily-white finishing school for the failsons of the old guard southern elite www.nytimes.com/2025/06/26/u...
