“Do I make it hard on you?” Viktor glances up, his face softening as he takes in Jayce’s posture, his expression: slumped, bent, his eyes shining. Carefully he puts his hand on Jayce’s knee. “No, lásko,” he says. “What makes you think that?” “We were talking about—” Jayce breaks off, gives him a quick helpless look. Viktor nods, he knows what it means—we, talking, that shorthand for Jayce’s therapist—and Jayce looks at him gratefully, wetting his lips. It’s still hard for him to talk about these things. Sometimes Viktor thinks it only gets harder for Jayce, his tender Jayce. “How not getting… help,” he says hesitantly, “makes other people do it for you. If you don’t do the work, everybody else has to…” he smiles, quick and nervous, like a flinch. “To take it on.” “Ah,” Viktor says. “I didn’t mean to make it hard on you,” he says, rubbing his wrist.

The thing he always forgets about healing a wound, is that some are bad enough they require debriding, first. To carve away that which has festered too long. To be touched softly is to be torn open, the dysfunctional scabbing pulled back to leave him raw and throbbing at the agony of it. He's near delirious as Viktor tucks himself upon the desk to pull Jayce forward, cradling Jayce's head against his belly, knees pressed to his ribs. Jayce can hear Viktor’s heartbeat, and it rends yet another pitiful bout of sobs from him. Viktor just strokes his hair, waiting him out, a soft hum of some vaguely familiar tune buzzing soothingly against Jayce's cheek. He's not certain how long they stay that way. Long enough that his head throbs from dehydration. The swelling around his eyes makes his skin feel uncomfortably tight. He's not really sure where to go from here.
