Avengers Academy #58 is out NOW! This was such a great issue, and as a major “dress-up gamer” in my youth, I have to say I had a blast dressing the cast in garden party outfits. Don’t worry about the cover image, I’m sure it’s all fine. #comics #art

Queer solidarity with Escapade. BLOODLINE (Brielle Brooks): Bri is here to represent the magical demimonde (“The Chair of Midnight”). She will be set apart here from other tech wizards by…her pet dinosaur (living happily in the school stables), but also her insistent passion for justice & ethics in innovation (think Cory Doctorow-esque critiques of the Elon Musk present age: the right to repair, enshittification, AI sludge, privatization, algorithmic racism, walled gardens vs free & open access to information, etc.) – and it is making her powerful enemies. Data wants to be free – but freedom is rarely safe! Nominator: Reed Richards, or Tony Stark. DRAMA: Huge big sister crush on Brielle. Loves outfitting Escapade in gear. Trying very hard to figure out where the sch…

Nominator: Emma Frost (or Xavier). DRAMA: Growing distance from Cerebella – wanderlust for adventure at odds with Cerebella’s happiness. Nerding out with Lunella. Feelings for Brielle. RED GOBLIN (or RASCAL) (Normie Osborn): As the heir to both the Osborn legacy and the host of a symbiote from the Venom/Carnage line, Normie is the scion of two monstrous houses, both alike in indignity. Normie is doing his best to transcend these grisly heritages, and his own dire private school silver-spoon proclivities, but his newborn symbiote Rascal is beginning to fear that of the two it is Normie, and not it, that is the more perverse. Nominator: Tricky because his identity is secret, but Spider-Man is best? DRAMA: Struggling to fit in. Strong ideological clash with Aaron. Surprising friendship with Lunella. KID JUGGERNAUT: When a shard of the crimson gem of Cyttorak fell into the hands of a young gay Korean-Canadian student and baker, he was cursed evermore to become a human juggernaut! Cyttorak’s champions are beings of living rage – so what will the demon (and the world at large!) make of this kind and gentle giant? And what does his family legacy mean for his place in the Marvel Universe? Nominator: Cosmic/Elemental heroes – feels like Wiccan & Hulkling, as a magic wielder and the child of Mar-Vell respectively, bless the school with a candidate? Or this character emerges as a candidate only after the AAPI month event. DRAMA: Growing feelings for Aaron. Gentle big brother to hyperactive Lunella. Tortoise to Escapade’s hare.

Here was my initial pitch to Marvel, back when it was going to be called "Marvel Academy"! Fun to see how contents have shifted!
