I don't think you have to make things easier to not require 3rd party tools to complete it. FF14 has boss attacks that are guaranteed to obliterate anyone who gets hit by it, but it has ancient forbidden techniques like "telegraphing the attack before it kills you"

I think part of the issue is that more recent shows DID have a semblance of "you watched the preceding episodes". Back in the day, you had to assume every episode could be someone's first due to the nature of syndicated television.

I get that but if MASH or Walker Texas Ranger is on the GET TV channel I do watch them. If there was a 00s and 10s equivalent that showed episodes of How I Met Your Mother I would avoid it like the plague.

A lot of the TV shows of the recent past have just completely lost cultural relevance. Sex and the City, How I Met Your Mother, Lost, etc.

I feel like you get more "culture points" these days by making Columbo and MASH references.
