Historian of China who studies, among other things, how people bought jobs in the government during the Qing dynasty. #tea addict. My book: https://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674278295
Can't see who it is either

17.12.2025 16:56 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Peter Perdue's China Marches West is a great book, but this part is off by 100 years. My paper next month at Academia Sinica would argue that "outsourcing war" as I call it was probably integral to the Qing war effort against the Zungars

17.10.2025 03:31 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0It's a real gem and quite useful, even if frequently a little wrong but can't expect perfection when someone tries to do this for China for like 2000 years of history

Good question. My view is if a student works enough on it with an AI bot so that the end product ends up original and good I don't mind it as much... Not like you can stop them anyway
Rare though, from what I can see
Few thoughts on AI student essays:
1) they're mostly not using it to write their work wholesale, but as something to sketch out the essay and then put their own content in that skeleton
2) because of that, most end up sounding very similar
3) emphasize originality in grading
Yeah debating what to do with essays. I don't want to completely give it up

12.10.2025 18:19 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0But really, I don't understand student psychology here. When the paper is 1) obviously AI and 2) full of hallucinations, why would you hand in something like this? It's a zero. Anything is better than a zero
