Publisher then decides: we can split this into two books, at 96pp each, and sell the same amount of writing for more.

Oh, same. But that's a writers-and-editors concern.

The padding commands never come from writers, or editors.

I've never heard the "viable game" version, but: I have absolutely been in the room (or on the phone, or in the email chain, etc.) for multiple instances of deliberate page-padding, at multiple publishers, back in my industry days. Easily one of the top 25 reasons why I left the industry. 😆

Yeah they're doing a brief theatrical run before it drops onto Netflix in a few days ... and we just had a mood to see it on the big screen. 😅

We had to do a road trip to get to a town showing the latest @rianjohnson.bsky.social Benoit Blanc film, Wake Up Dead Man ... but it was well worth the trip. Maybe my favorite of the "Knives Out" films so far. Faith can be beautiful even when it's bonkers (and dangerous even when it's beautiful).

The narrative that we are being sold that our children's safety is somehow threatened by trans people participating in all aspects of public life as their authentic selves is the exact same bullshit that was peddled about queer folks 30 years ago. It was a lie then and it's a lie now.

Yeah. There is a fundamental disagreement emerging between GOP folks who see him as a lame duck, and the "emperors-for-life are neither lame nor waterfowl" contingent.

There are also, at this stage, quite a few trying to keep a foot on both sides of the crack, hoping it doesn't become a chasm.
