Doug Ford wants TTC officers to crack down on drug users. Why some say that’s a bad idea
The provincial government is exploring a move that would grant greater authority to the city’s specialized transit peace officers
This will increase the mass profiling & caging (6 months in jail) for Black and Indigenous folks suspected of drug use: a 2021 report found Black and Indigenous riders were “grossly overrepresented” in interactions with TTC officers and special constables. www.thestar.com/news/gta/dou...

This needs to be talked about more - police frequently harass and try to criminalize the families and loved ones of the folks they have killed, especially when they have been vocal.

It's not just conservatives who treat "DEI" as holding society back.
Ruth Wilson Gilmore notes leftists blame identity politics for solidarity failing. "Often what they really mean, given the examples they choose, is that Black people or women of all races interrupted and messed up class politics."

No just publishing anything mind you- but if you are thinking hard about freedom and unfreedom, write it down and put it out! Even if it’s not amazing maybe your fifth one will be amazing. There is so much mainstream mediocrity and we always need more strong, radical analysis.

My students are so smart.Their book reviews - on works by political prisoners - are truly giving me so much joy today. I continue to encourage them-and also anyone onhere thinking hard - to publish work! We always need more. So many brilliant folks don’t yet know the value of what they contribute.

It saddens me that people of color especially women of color have to immediately offer disclaimers that they aren't self-aggrandizing or potentially fraudulent whenever they get attention for their good deeds. I know why folks feel compelled to do this but it's unfair. You're great. No caveats.

She’s raised almost $20m to help Minnesota – she thinks you can do it too
Ashley Fairbanks launched Stand with Minnesota as ICE raids rocked her home town – now donations are pouring in, and families’ rent is being paid
I need to address this immediately, because I am WAY too Minnesotan to ever claim credit for this.
I built a thing to point the fire hose of people's generosity in the right direction. That's it.
I am thankful for the piece, because hopefully it means people will donate more money.

I’ve thought a lot about this ever since @biidaasamose.bsky.social and @policingblack.bsky.social alluded a bit to the ways movements experience whirlwind moments in “Rehearsals for Living” and accompanying interviews about it.

I wrote about the history of Black Zionism for @thefunambulist.bsky.social and the baffling ways that people use identity/oppression to justify genocidal and colonial state projects past and present. Marcus Garvey, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and much more offer disturbing warnings. Preorder if you can!

Abolition Is Still the Only Way Out of This
Forget the useless so-called “reforms” to ICE and policing currently on offer. We need much more fundamental change.
Democrats are suggesting reforms for ICE, but the reality is: abolition is the way forward, not reform.

They were occupying Justin Trudeau’s office to protest Canada’s diplomatic and police support of Jovenel Moïse, a ruler whom most Haitians deemed a corrupt, undemocratically installed Western puppet. Policing functions in the service of imperialism. 4/4

In 1963 MLK supported a nationwide boycott of Xmas shopping. @jeannetheoharis.bsky.social notes that the NYT editorial board wrote a piece slamming the effort called “Strike Against Santa Claus” which they said would “put civil rights activists on the same level as those who did the church bombing.”
