Aside from areas in the eastern Bering Sea and Greenland Sea, nearly all locations along the outer edge observed less sea ice compared to average in February 2026. This is a pretty common story nowadays during winter due to long-term climate change.

Every spring, thousands of fish swim through the Oudegracht in Utrecht, looking for a place to lay their eggs. But the Weerdsluis is often closed. The Fish Doorbell helps. When you spot a fish on the livestream, press the doorbell. The lock keeper will check to see if the lock can be opened.

The report “A Nordic Perspective on AMOC Tipping” reviews the current state of science on the impacts of potential Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) collapse and provides recommendations for policy actions.

From “Environmental and Societal Consequences of an Increase in Atmospheric CO2”, a summary by Roger Revelle of the DoE-AAAS Workshop held at Annapolis, Maryland on April 26, 1979 “The dominant concerns of the panel on the ocean and the cryosphere were the impacts on fisheries of a global atmospheric warming and a possible disintegration of the West Antarctic ice cap. . . . A slackening in average wind speeds could be expected…. with a concomitant larger decrease in wind stress on the surface ocean waters. This could result in a diminution in upwelling and vertical convection and correspondingly in nutrient recycling and primary organic production in the ocean At the same time, the pH of the waters near the surface might become significantly lower, with pronounced effects on the ecology and species composition of plankton communities… “Major changes in the distribution and species composition of terrestrial and fresh~water ecosystems could occur… “Changes in the distribution of food resources on a global scale are to be expected, with significant social, institutional, economic, and political ramifications.”

Aan het eind van het jaar voegen we traditiegetrouw een nieuw streepje toe aan de klimaatstreepjescode: de reeks gekleurde lijnen die laat zien hoe de temperatuur in Nederland sinds 1901 is veranderd. De streep van 2025 kleurt donkerrood.

The funding is not enough
It's unreasonable to ask or demand of a nervous system that has developed specific defenses for specific reasons, to "just be normal."
We didn't develop these patterns just for the hell of it, & easing out of them is going to require us to acknowledge & respect why they exist.
