As someone who was also a wee lesbian at an all girls Catholic school, the warmth & sensitivity of both the writing and+ Nicola Coughlan’s performance make it some of the best TV I’ve seen. And I think it’s that even without my personal perspective informing it tbh.
All in 30-min comedy format!

Obviously I can’t Know this but judging by Clare + and then Dara in How to Get To Heaven From Belfast, it seems to me McGee must have some lesbian friends in her life who she regards with fondness that really shows through in her well-observed writing.

Then *in* S1E6 when Erin’s roped them all into helping with the magazine, I know she’s naturally anxious but she gets aggressive to the copier & is just more frazzled than normal. Of course she is, she just sent in an anonymous piece about how she’s gay & it’s probably been on her mind ever since.

Of course they can’t bc even though they don’t know at that point something about their friend does not align with what they are of course talking about in the 90s, which is straight sex as default.

When all the other girls are simping over Peter the hot priest, Clare has absolutely nothing to say.
When she says about how they all have to have sex some time in their lives at Jenny’s party, her friends all say they can’t ever see her having sex.
