The previously described illustration but with the ghosts removed to fully show the background. A path winds off into a dark tunnel of trees. Among the tomb stones we see a Celtic cross, and one with a cherub carving. Far back is a statue of an angel with its arm raised. The colour palette is muted creams with dusky purples, blues and greys.

I fully illustrated the background separate from the ghosts, so I could get the transclucent effect I wanted. Since I went to the effort I figured it was worth showing off on its own, a long with a couple of closeups.

The longest frescoed wall in the Hall of the Mysteries in the Villa dei Misteri in Pompeii, showing an assortment of women and mythological characters. The bride is identified by the presence of yellow clothing or drapery (referring to the yellow flammeum that a bride wears at her wedding?). The background is a rich, intense red, while a horizontal border above this long scene is made to look like fake mottled stone.

Closeup of the bride and her attendant on the opposing wall. Here, her hair has either just been let down, or the attendant is about to braid it into the complex hairstyles that Roman women preferred. She looks just to the left of us, plaintively, her left hand on top of her head, her right holding a lock of hair. She has her yellow mantle wrapped around her lower torso and legs, tied with a pale purple sash.

These famed Second Style frescos from the Villa dei Misteri in #Pompeii are thought to portray a bride’s induction into an ancient mystery cult before her marriage. Given the presence of Dionysus and his retinue, many believe that cult is the Dionysian or Bacchic Mysteries. 🏺
