I'll be facilitating a workshop (online) in June on immersive approaches in #SciComm that are based on the senses of smell, taste or touch. If you are working in this space, please register your interest now. We'll be aiming to have around 8-10 participants, representing a range of areas ⬇️:

On my walk to the conference I was struck by the significance of seeing the sculpture ‘Las Sirgueras’, by artist Dora Salazar. It depicts four 'rope' girls who towed vessels and symbolises the importance of women's work and the path to equality.

Thank you to Edurne Gaston Estanga, Esther Sánchez García, Óscar Menéndez and Javier Pedreira (Wicho) for not only organising the event but being such wonderful hosts during my stay, and to the translator (whose name I didn't catch) for translating my talk.

‘Las Sirgueras’, by artist Dora Salazar, is a recognition of the importance of women's work and the path to equality. The work pays tribute to the figure of the sirgueras (the rope girls), women who towed vessels along the estuary using only a rope.

I had the pleasure of speaking yesterday at the Gender and Science Communication event in Bilbao @generoycomunicacion.com, it was wonderful to see over 200 participants at a conference focusing on this topic.

Thank you @manchesterup.bsky.social it’s been a pleasure to work with you on the next edition ☺️ We’re having a little rest now before revisions… 🤞 not too many.

📗 Trust - it's been helpful to write together, knowing that we can both take criticism of our writing (sometimes quite bluntly 😂) and working together to make the second edition the best it can be. Have you written a 2nd, 3rd or 4th edition? What would you add? @scicommsuwe.bsky.social

16.01.2025 15:54 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

📙 It takes a lot of time to write a new edition and more than we both expected - Language moves on, what was once seen as innovative might now be routine and there's a lot of thinking around what's useful for new readers versus those revisiting a new edition.

16.01.2025 15:54 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

📘 It's really hard to let go of content you once loved - inevitably writing a 2nd edition means chopping up sentences and paragraphs you spent a lot of time crafting a few years ago. This is hard. It was much more difficult to tinker with chapters than to write them from scratch.

16.01.2025 15:54 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

📕 Have an excellent referencing system in place - with new updates, references no longer being accessible, and some content cut completely, it's really important to keep track of the details or you can spend a long time working on the reference list at the end of the re-writing process.

We're very excited by the content so far, including new chapters on 'inclusivity', 'citizen science' and 'professionalisation'. Having not written a 2nd edition before we didn't quite know what we were in store for. Here are some tips which might be helpful to others updating books in the future...
