One of the reasons I find the abuse of power in the ACNA so horrifying is how many of us attended ACNA churches after attending spiritually abusive churches and were told the ecclesiastical hierarchy meant there would be accountability if something ever happened in one of our churches.

Chicago has a long tradition of clergy being involved in justice work, including protests and marches led by clergy during the Civil Rights Movement. Some of these marches were tied to liturgy and faith practice like the 1965 protests on Ash Wednesday and throughout Lent.

I personally know many of the clergy who have signed onto this letter and I am grateful for their commitment to following the biblical mandates to care for migrants and prisoners.

I don’t have any pictures, but she looked great when I saw her at mile 17.5. I couldn’t tell if she was running with anyone or was in the general pack of runners going past. That stretch heading west after the halfway point is so challenging.

Generally speaking, I only expect race officials to be using whistles when racing (i.e. announcing lead runners, get out of the way, some alert) so it’s a very confusing and distracting sound for runners and not a general sound of support.

One of the ways I could tell if someone was from out of town for the Chicago Marathon was if they were casually (unknowingly) blowing a whistle in these rhythms to cheer for the runners, which was very stressful considering all of the rumors of ICE presence.
