On thursday I was granted an honorary doctorate by the University of York, where I studied 20 years ago (and where I've taught for the past decade). It was lovely -- but I did not realise I would also get a fun photoshoot after the ceremony! Big thanks to Paul Shields for making us all look smart

Roman pottery expert honoured by Newcastle University
Kay Hartley, an international scholar in mortarium studies, was made an Honorary Doctor of Letters at a degree ceremony today.
Long overdue recognition for Dr Kay Hartley, Romano-British mortaria expert since the 1950s, still at work at 94, & a family friend. Rightly described as 'doyenne' of a discipline 'she single-handedly developed', & 'the oracle' of her subject.
