Lambeosaurine crests! New work compares internal nasal anatomy of adult Corythosaurus & Lambeosaurus vs juveniles & Hypacrosaurus. Strong genus-level differences, but surprisingly little variation between Corythosaurus species.

How did our mammalian #posture arise from our sprawling #synapsid ancestors? @docrobbrock.bsky.social &co reveal #parasagittal postures in stem therians, implying that synapsids evolved & radiated with distinct forelimb trait combinations for most of their history @plosbiology.org π§ͺ plos.io/4loAHoy

Backlit low angle shot from a vantage point amidst ferns, a triceratops is visible in the distance behind a fallen log and a small flock of birds are flying by close to camera.
New paleoart piece! Didnβt use 3D for this one as I just wanted to dive into drawing and painting, and had some fun attempting and figuring out a different workflow! #paleoart #dinosaurart #triceratops

an illustration shows a creature like a large lizard or crocodile with a fuzzy mammal animal at its feet on a grassy lip of land overlooking a small lagoon or pond with layers of rolling hills covered in tropical trees disappearing into a pale pink sunset mist
A fossil tooth and two vertebrae unearthed in the Dominican Republic have paleontologists rethinking sebecids, giant croclike terrestrial predators, and their story in the Caribbean.

Mary drawing
Illustration of the original Iguanodon teeth from Mantell, G. 1825. "Notice on the Iguanodon, a newly discovered fossil reptile, from the sandstone of Tilgate Forest, in Sussex." In: Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London 115: 179-186.
Continuing the International Day of Women in Science. Mary Ann Woodhouse (Mantell)(1795-1869) self taught artist who illustrated hundreds of plates and specimens for Gideon Mantell, helping with discovery & description of the Iguanadon, one of the first dinosaurs (celebrating 200 year anniversary!)

Pencil drawing of an Iguanodon, a large herbivorous dinosaur with a heavy, beaked, ungulate-like head and large distinctive 'thumb' claws on its hands.
#Iguanodon was formally named 200 years ago today in 1825. The second dinosaur to be named after Megalosaurus, and one of three genera originally used to define Dinosauria.

A stylized drawing of Pterodaustro. The pterosaur is portrayed in shallow water (where it likely fed using hundreds of teeth to filter food items), with hands positioned outwards as suggested by pterodactyloids footprints. The wing membranes of pterosaurs had sophisticated anatomy and the illustration shows them contracted. The fluff on the tail hints to the viewer that the animal was covered with pycnofiber. The Pterodaustro colours are inspired by flamingos, modern animals of similar feeding behaviour which take their pigments from their food.
Here's Pterodaustro, a fantastic-looking pterosaur with hundreds of bristle-like teeth used to filter out tiny tiny smol food (eg. plankton) from the water!

Self-organized patterning of crocodile head scales by compressive folding - Nature
Crocodile head scales self-organize through purely mechanical compressive skin folding rather than a patterning process controlled by gene interactions.
Can I just say that this is about the coolest study that I've seen in ages. Just outstanding integrative science! #OA in Nature, too. Plus, the YouTube vid is exceptionally well done: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuvU.... Sorry if I'm gushing, but it's all an early #Crocmas gift. ππ
