I’m not defending the abuser, mind you. I just wish it were more commonly taught that abuse can come from anyone, and therefore we should be able to recognize the patterns in ourselves.

Oh and—especially true of parents—if you truly believe you’re doing it for their own good, you can feel like an altruist or a protector. How are you supposed to know that’s wrong if you were never taught? But abuse IS control. You have to let them make their own decisions, even if you disagree.

And I think oftentimes people assume they aren’t capable of ruining someone’s life or performing textbook abusive behaviors. It’s very Us vs Them. Anyone can slip into toxic behavioral patterns! But no one wants to think about that.

I’ve seen a lot of “how to spot an abuser” kinds of things in my time, but I wish there was more available info on “how to spot toxic patterns in your own behavior” info. It’s easy to react to emotions and get lost in fear and not realize what’s going on.
