They had multiple names (Red Wolves, Red Tails, Pigskins, Football Team) that seemingly had widespread support and they chose one with zero fanfare that could be shortened to Commies. I have no doubt it was intentional and a slap in the face to everyone who wanted the racial slur name changed.

I'm still convinced they chose Commanders specifically because it's a horrible name and would create enough dismay that they'd have a built in excuse to eventually change it back. Now that they have the president applying additional pressure, I fully expect it to happen.
