Transformative Justice cover image
Transformative Justice (TJ) emerged from abolitionist and queer-feminist movements. It was developed as a community-based approach to address violence, discrimination, and harm — without relying on punishment, police, or other state systems of control and exclusion.
At its core, it asks: How can collective accountability, healing, and transformation become possible?
It’s not about isolated acts of harm, but about the conditions that allow violence to occur — power dynamics, isolation, lack of care, or unexamined structures.
Transformative Justice seeks ways to take responsibility, practice care in action, support those affected, and transform the structures that enable harm.
It is a collective practice that requires negotiation, trust, and long-term commitment.
For awareness work, this means understanding accountability and care not as opposites, but as interconnected practices — finding ways together to create safety, reflection, and change, even after boundaries have been crossed.
As a collective, we at AwA* support this approach through education, exchange, and the development of standards that center accountability, reflection, and collective care.
