190. SNAP WTF? A very quick explainer on what (and why) Justice Jackson issued an "administrative stay" in the SNAP case late on Friday night, and on what's likely to happen next

Read about WHY Ketanji Brown Jackson stayed the SNAP order. Her move is probably the best solution for getting SNAP benefits approved quickly. open.substack.com/pub/stevevla...

Trump Administration Demands States β€˜Undo’ Work to Send Full Food Stamps

Trump is still using hunger as a political weapon while also refusing to address skyrocketing health care costs β€” and seems to be enjoying it. It’s the definition of sadism. A truly twisted man.

I’m no great fan of the ACA.

I believe we should guarantee health care as a human right through a single-payer Medicare for All system.

But β€” at minimum β€” we cannot allow Republicans to destroy our already-broken system by doubling insurance premiums for 20 million Americans.

Millions of farmers, small business owners, and families are seeing their health insurance premiums skyrocket because Trump and Congressional Republicans refuse to come to the table and negotiate with Democrats.

Americans deserve better.

Wrong choice. Caving now β€” they’ll starve due to medical debt or die from loss of medical coverage.

Vote no.

Hunger is not a political weapon, and I will continue pushing to ensure Trump fully funds SNAP and put an end to this cruelty.

I’ve voted 7 times to reopen the government in a way that holds Trump accountable for his lawlessness and prevents a health care crisis.

I’m prepared to work toward a compromise, but this β€œdeal” before us does not come close to meeting those terms. Voting NO.

Full statement:

10.11.2025 00:48 β€” πŸ‘ 4546    πŸ” 796    πŸ’¬ 520    πŸ“Œ 95

My red line has always been lowering health costs for Americans. Donald Trump and Republicans don’t want an agreement that meets that bar. I’m a no.

10.11.2025 00:54 β€” πŸ‘ 4486    πŸ” 679    πŸ’¬ 510    πŸ“Œ 67

I will not support a deal that does nothing to make health care more affordable.

We are in a health care emergency. A simple one-year extension of these tax credits would cost less than Donald Trump’s $40 billion bailout for Argentina.

A vote for this bill is a mistake.

10.11.2025 01:06 β€” πŸ‘ 14896    πŸ” 2857    πŸ’¬ 1043    πŸ“Œ 189

I can’t support this bill. It doesn’t meet the urgency of the moment and deliver actual relief that can pass both chambers of Congress.

I’ve been clear that we need real action to stop the devastating health care cost increases that are hurting millions of families. 1/2

Tonight, I am voting no on a procedural vote on an appropriations deal that would re-open the government. Since July, I have been clear: to earn my vote, Republicans would have to do something to bring down the cost of health care for working and middle-class Michiganders. (1/4)

10.11.2025 01:22 β€” πŸ‘ 1102    πŸ” 200    πŸ’¬ 207    πŸ“Œ 38

I am a no on the CR agreement. I respect my colleagues on both sides, but the American people don’t deserve a preventable increase in health care costs.

10.11.2025 01:26 β€” πŸ‘ 246    πŸ” 38    πŸ’¬ 53    πŸ“Œ 8

But I cannot support a deal that still leaves millions of Americans wondering how they are going to pay for their health care or whether they will be able to afford to get sick.

10.11.2025 01:28 β€” πŸ‘ 1105    πŸ” 128    πŸ’¬ 201    πŸ“Œ 46

The government has been shut down for 40 daysβ€”the longest in history. All Democrats have fought hard for extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits that make health care affordable for millions. I’m voting against the bill given it doesn’t extend these valuable tax credits.

Trump and Republicans refuse to fight for American families, but I refuse to give up on them.

I simply cannot vote to do nothing to help protect them from Trump’s vindictive efforts in exchange for a vague promise from the least trustworthy Republican party in our nation’s history.

LIVE: I Won't Support Doubling Health Care Premiums
YouTube video by Senator Bernie Sanders LIVE: I Won't Support Doubling Health Care Premiums

I’m voting no on the continuing resolution that would double healthcare premiums for 20 million Americans, kick 15 million people off Medicaid & allow 50,000 Americans to die unnecessarily every year.

All to give $1 trillion in tax breaks for billionaires.

I refuse to support a funding bill that fails to address the Republican health care crisis.

And make health insurance affordable.

The American people clearly understand the stakes and the urgency. We must too.

I'm voting no.

10.11.2025 01:45 β€” πŸ‘ 5484    πŸ” 784    πŸ’¬ 701    πŸ“Œ 92

I will not support this bill that completely fails to help Americans afford their health care.

Trump and R’s have more than doubled Americans’ health care premiums, and for 40 days they have refused to lift a finger to do a thing about it. In fact, they’ve made it worse by taking food from kids.

10.11.2025 01:54 β€” πŸ‘ 1409    πŸ” 219    πŸ’¬ 76    πŸ“Œ 16

This bill doesn’t address the core issue that millions of Americans will no longer be able to afford ACA insurance coverage next year. I’m willing to work with anyone to create a path forward but this isn’t it.

I voted no tonight.

But the next phase of Democrats’ health care affordability fight is starting.

While I personally don’t believe Republicans will keep their promise to work with us on lowering health care costs, I would be thrilled to be wrong.

10.11.2025 02:17 β€” πŸ‘ 2167    πŸ” 375    πŸ’¬ 335    πŸ“Œ 37

Bullies gain power when their misconduct succeeds in causing righteous people to yield in the face of wrongdoing. That’s why voting for Trump's continuing resolution - without any protection against his health care cuts or his growing illegality - is a mistake.

I voted NO.
