Heatwaves caused more than 1,000 deaths in Australia over four-year period, study finds Monash researchers say findings underscore urgency of addressing climate-related health risks as continent experiences more days of extreme heat

From 2016-2019, heatwaves caused 1,009 deaths in Australia, according to new research.

Emergency medicine specialist Dr Kimberly Humphrey warns that global heating is adding strain to Australia’s already overstretched health service, with vulnerable communities being disproportionately affected.

As health professionals, Doctors for the Environment Australia takes the projections in the report very seriously, especially as they echo concerns that we have been raising as an organisation for many years.

First climate risk assessment finds 1.5m Australians at risk from sea level rise by 2050 One and a half million Australians are at risk from sea levels rising by 2050 unless climate change can be limited, Australia’s first national climate risk assessment warns.

This report should serve as a wake-up call for anyone still clinging to climate denialism or a business-as-usual approach to climate risks.

Our government clearly understands the risk- they must now accept their responsibility to not make things worse by moving us on from coal, oil and gas.

Taking Woodside to court was a huge risk for a small not-for-profit like ours, but we knew we had to try.

'Huge' leak from gas plant kept secret from public in 'national scandal' Documents reveal the scale of carbon pollution leaking from a Darwin LNG tank was like adding 8,300 new cars to the road every year. It is about to be filled again.

A LNG tank just 7km from Darwin, has been leaking methane for nearly 20 years. Regulators knew, but kept the public in the dark.

The faulty tank poses unacceptable risks to the environment, climate & the health of the community. This is an absolute outrage.

Santos must fix this leak immediately.
