I think it was. Typically we get undefined characters dying or it's written off as a dream sequence. That said, it should set the tone that no one is safe (like the red wedding) which I don't feel yet.

I thought it was impressive how they spent so much time introducing us to characters, guving back stories and personalities, like they were going to be our protagonists, then pulled the rug out. I wasn't expecting that.

AI is a bad word these days but it's brilliant for this. I just filled out all the NPCs in a town (Village of Homlet style) in the shadows of the Carpathian mountains and needed theme appropriate first and last names. Before that I used baby and surname registries.

I also find myself signing up for games at cons that I think will be awesome but are underwhelming and I take it upon myself to make the awesome I had in my head around a game system that makes srnse.

Depends. Systems like CoC, Vaesen, Aliend and Bladerunner are really setting specific. SWADE, Monster of The Week, etc could be anything.

Speaking of the underdark, I highly recommend this movie. It's not perfect, but the palpable terror of what the Underdark represents is wonderful.

They are. I bought the Vaesen on a while back when it was reasonable. The other I needed now because the Mythic Carpathian expansion references it a lot.

Dragonbane is great too. I'm not normally a big fan of automatic hit systems, but the way this one works with armour is good. And the monsters having unique attack tables it really narrative and fun. Anything from Free League is top notch.

I really like it. It's a lot like Call of Cthulhu but instead of mind bending cosmic horror you're dealing with intimate spooky folk horror. It's fun how simple the scenarios play out.

Super simple. D6 dice pools, 6's are successes. You can push rolls once, but get conditions when you fail, which cause you -d6 per condition until healed. Vaesen are super strong, you want to solve the mystery, and perform the ritual instead of confronting the Vaesen directly.

Looks like great fun!
