All successful political actors in out day&age benefit from that because they can easily hijack valid talking points and subvert them into taboos—if you engage on that topic, even if from a completely different angle, you risk being ostracized by people
you generally agree with.

No one dares to go against the grain if that means losing internet points (which are now pegged to real-life consequences as well).

Terms such as “cancel culture” and “political correctness” are now too charged to mean actually something, and anyone who uses them to defend their viewpoints is probably not well-intentoned. That being said, I believe they’re a manifestation of what you’re talking about. 1/
