It's really stupid of us as a country to put gas lines leading into every building just so people can give themselves lung damage while cooking breakfast. The mass proliferation of heat pumps and induction stoves cannot proceed quickly enough

Agreed on the job bit but:
what about the $500 dollars of subsidies that the state put in?
what about the fact that as a failing student you take up more faculty time, depriving it from other students?
perhaps a selection mechanism is needed for who can enroll?

This example, by the way, comes from personal experience.

The last one is under appreciated: TAing the “honors” advanced intro college classes was a notoriously shitty gig.
Why? Because you had students who had never _had_ to study for a math class before show up to your office, freaked out that they just got their first C ever in a math class.

The students do - or they will once they realize how big their student loans will be.
The taxpayers that (even still) subsidize their education do.
The faculty cares, because giving bad grades and dealing with the consequences is _extremely_ unpleasant.

Real world training is expensive, and the org needs a certain pass rate to achieve an ROI, so you instead you do assessments based on surrogates
Who do so few understand this??

The US Military has this same problem: and they break it up quite well: assessment, selection and training
You can pass the test, but not be selected because of other candidates/the team requires other things/…

The biggest era of the “popularist” crowd is to overestimate the coherence of voter opinion even on a single issue. Voters don’t like what they imagine Democrats to be doing on immigration, but they also don’t like what they see the Trump admin doing. The public is free to hate everything.

But in general I t’s so bad that HN is criticizing the product for being janky garbage.

Bleakest sign on ChatGPT is how sloppy their website is once you use frequently.
Terrible latency, no design pattern, and shocking broken features such as copy paste.
In theory it’s a 100 billion dollar dollar product - but after repeat uses: it’s just slop.

I want a public record of some of my stances:
1) With the sole exception of folks who physically cannot, vaccinations should be mandatory. This is part of living in society, and is not negotiable. If your religion forbids it, then your religion is incompatible with society and you have to leave.

The backbone of the placebo effect is that the "care ritual" has real healing effects for all sorts of minor bullshit.
I personally am lucky to have the best doctors in the world.
The downside: I "get" 1 appt/yr, and a text once a month saying "your blood counts look good".

You have to empathize with them.
Some cannot handle that sometime, you acquire a mutation, and you get sick and die.
Other feel disrespected by a doc and they turn to the real comforts offered by the practitioners of woo.
