I've read other James Scott Bell guides, but just discovered this one from 2023.
Highly practical little notes on fiction writing he's collected for himself over the years. Recommended.

After 59 days in Pending purgatory, the corrected and expanded version of "Shipwrecked, Sort of" is live on @literotica.com
It took a polite note to the admin to get it published.
Now I can pretend the error-filled first version never existed π¬

Great list. I've read Voice by James Scott Bell, but none of the others. Yet.
12.11.2025 01:56 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0You're welcome. Your Master List has been godsend for this fledgling writer. Can't find the dead tree version in Canada yet (I do not buy from Amazon). Have to settle for the ebook from Kobo for now.
04.11.2025 17:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The first edition of Mast Lists for Writers was the first writing references I ever bought. Now this gold edition adds more!
Highly recommended for all fiction writers.
Oh, thank you! Looks excellent and great timing... my copy of the first edition is nearly worn out from use.
04.11.2025 17:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Next: discussing "then" vs "and" vs "and then" :-)
04.11.2025 02:17 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Absolutely: filler words. I tend to include them by habit, then delete them on first edit: just, that, very, simply, really, actually, somewhat, began... they make prose mushy flab.
There are places where "just", "that" and other fillers are needed, but that's rare.
Recent reader comments have criticized my stories for "missing connecting words".
Looking at the stories, I think they're talking about the word "that"... like "I'm glad you came" instead of "I'm glad that you came."
Seriously? "That" is a filler word like "just" that can almost always be omitted.
You nailed her expression. Wonderful work!

I thought the "Fifty Shades of Grey" thing was bad (both the writing and the popularity). Now there's "Morning Glory Milking Farm". Erk.

So... for spooky-themed erotica stories I've done:
A demon
Ghosts
Were-moose
Frankenstein's monster
A witch
...and this year, vampires
Skeletons having sex is ridiculous (and SO noisy). Guess all that's left to write about is zombies.
And I hate zombies.
