Weaver goes off-piste. Literally weaving my landscape. Topographia, the anchor point to my new collection of work which will be at the Staithes Festival of arts and Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair. This coast…💙

..and weft, meaning each block is a different blended colour. This creates a painterly effect- the solid colour block can be traced diagonally echoing the twill lines in the structure.

..and under 1. So the pale weft covers more of the warp to create a white frame. For the blocks, they use the opposite- 3/1 twill, the coloured weft passing under 3 and over 1 warp thread- so the warp is dominant. The colour chart design follows the colour progression in warp ..

Now we weave. Remember that ‘pattern’ is created by manipulation of colour? Here the horizontal frames of the blocks are created by using the same colour of yarn in the shuttle. The structure is a block twill- the horizontal frame is 1/3 twill- the weft passing over 3 threads..

The quill is loaded into the shuttle and the yarn is passed through a simple tensioner to regulate the speed of the yarn. The balance must be right and is different for each fibre. This keeps weaving smooth, fast and the selvedges neat

Once clean sheds are obtained, weaving can begin. Contrary to what most people think, the shuttle threads are passive- they simply lock in place the (active)warp threads according to the draft. The weft is wound on to pirns (or quills made of paper). I use a drill with a spike

The lamms must also be levelled so that the sheds are clean and consistent. My previous weave was a highly unbalanced structure so the lamms are all over the place for this weave. The cords are a chain, with holes at regular intervals for adjustment

To do this the jacks, the pivot point of the cords that lift and depress the warp need to be pinned to the vertical as a datum point. The shafts are levelled, the warp must pass through the centre of the eye of the heddles

Fettling: to weave a fabric the shuttle carries the weft between the warp threads lifted in the right order to create the structure. This gap is called the shed. There are 256 possible sheds on an 8 shaft loom. The sheds must be clean so the shuttle can pass through correctly

This ensures the fabric is square and the fell line is perpendicular to the warp. Once all the bouts are tensioned evenly and tied on, the threads must be stress evenly. This is done by using by thick waste yarn which will be removed when finished.

Tie - on. The warp must be under tension so it needs tying to the cloth beam which will hold the woven cloth. To save precious yarn, a lease stick and cords are used. Each bout must be tied to the stick evenly, with the same number of ends on each side of the centre line

Well that took far longer than anticipated! One child birthday (with associated custom velvet cape tailoring) and a virus, but finally off the loom. Next up, a bonkers project that doesn’t use my loom at all!
