That said, the FJC data does provide a roadmap to cases (via docket no.'s) where county codes aren't provided -- though, more than 600 such cases have been filed since the start of 2015, so not exactly a free and quick lift ... credit card and Python required, it looks like.

I presume it's the Civil Cover Sheet. To your point, though, I think "the human element" plays a role here. All of the Connecticut resident cases are associated with the Connecticut district courts. There are no CT residents listed in any court outside CT. www.uscourts.gov/sites/defaul...

Also, I should say: I'm almost certain county codes reflect FIPS. That said, I haven't yet tracked down the manual - "City and Town Locations and County Statistical Codes" (January 1984) that FJC is still referring to when assigning county codes. www.fjc.gov/sites/defaul...

Theoretically, the federal judiciary is collecting county residency data for 2026, as it did across 2025. But I can't speak to the process for if/how it becomes centralized, and other Qs like that. Here's an Excel sheet I just spun up. github.com/danbauman77/...

If it's any help, the Federal Judicial Center tracks immigration-related habeas petitions, & in theory, the "county residence" field could be useful (w/ caveats, given that less-defined fields ("within the U.S., but another state" or "outside the U.S.") are most popular) www.fjc.gov/research/idb...

These Colleges Cut Back During the Pandemic. Except When It Came to Their Presidentsβ Pay Packages.
CODED WITH PYTHON: A tool to monitor new filings reported on the U.S. Department of Labor's undocumented Top Hat Plan API

NEW @chronicle.com: I sat down with the chancellors of Vanderbilt and WashU to talk about how they believe #HigherEd should respond to Trumpism, and the pushback that stance has gotten from their peers. #AcademicSky

What a Harvard Deal Would Mean for Higher Ed
Some faculty and outside observers fear there are no good deals to be made with the federal government. Others hope for a path forward that safeguards university research and teaching.
In light of this morning's letter from the White House antisemitism task force to Harvard β which found Harvard "in violent violation of Title VI" β here's @franciediep.bsky.social and @erickelderman.bsky.social on what a deal between the parties might mean for #HigherEd. #AcademicSky

HBCUs Reel as Trump Cuts Black-Focused Grants: βThis Is Our Existenceβ
HBCUsβ mission-driven effort to serve Black communities could now result in severe budget cuts under Trumpβs crusade against DEI. Itβs all a big misunderstanding, advocates say.
Trump, who said last year that he had βsavedβ historically Black colleges, has canceled $140 million in grants to them since March.
Agencies told HBCUs βto change the language in grant applications that explicitly focus on Black people β or lose federal funding.β
