I think R.E.M.'s cover of Pale Blue Eyes beats the VU original.

Not that there's much to the original besides familiarity, but the Replacements cover of the Mary Tyler Moore Show's theme song is top-notch.

Hi, we are an alternative to Amazon-owned Audible πŸ‘‹πŸ» With us, you select the independent bookshop you want to support (we have 3,000+ partners across the globe), and we share profits from your purchase with them.

Over 2.5 billion years ago, trillions of tiny Cyanobacteria spent hundreds of millions of years creating an oxygen-rich atmosphere on Earth.

Take a deep breath. How are you using your oxygen today? Be present. Give freely. Care for others. Make your ancient microbial cousins proud. Exhale. Repeat.

Not only was 4-star Admiral Coast Guard Commandant Linda Fagan fired, the MAGA regime evicted her from her home with just 3 hours of notice. She is the first woman ever to lead a branch of the U.S. military. When the GOP says they respect troops, tell them to go fuck themselves.

About Us | New & Used Books from ThriftBooks

Hey #Booksky if you’re in the US and looking to step away from the zon for physical books can I highly recommend Thrift Books?

They donate and partner with non-profits to support school libraries in underserved areas, and prison libraries. Plus, the book prices are *very good*

Dear DNC, DSCC, and DCCC:

I don't want to see another fundraising text or email asking for a dollar of mine until I see an actual plan to meet this moment.

Y'all had 11 weeks between the election and inauguration, and there's still no plan. There's no excuse for that.

No plan, no donation.

"Punching Nazis" is a general category. It includes but is not limited to actual punching. If what you're doing gums up the works for them, makes their lives difficult, frustrates their aims, slows them down, pisses them off, and makes them look like fools, well then, you, my friend, are a steely-eyed Nazi puncher.

Something I wrote elsewhere but is relevant here, as we start this first full week of February 2025:

I know - I do share a love of the Dewey Decimal System because I learned as a kid to go straight to the 800s! But given that a lot of my favorite authors today would fall outside those pretty narrow categories, I can see why it needed to go. And that's just fiction.

I read a lot of audiobooks - I use the Libby app with the library's collection and if there's something I can't get there, I can buy it through the libro app and support my local bookstore!

OH MY GOD MICROFICHE! I had forgotten all about that! (And there was a period of time when I used it with some frequency!)

The Dewey Decimal System is very limiting when used in any but the smallest libraries. There are far too many subject categories for it to be useful. For instance, the 800s only have dedicated areas for things like American, German, Italian ... and "Other" which ends up covering anyplace not White.

There are very few libraries that can put the resources - money, space, organization - toward paper periodicals that only benefit people who come into the library at least several times a week.

Our library even hosts a board game night once a month where you can try out different games and have some guidance for the more complicated ones. Plus - they host tabletop RPG nights!

I think that you cannot access the professionally produced audiobooks for free on YouTube without violating copyright. But also - this is a thread to celebrate everything libraries do. Why direct people elsewhere? I listen to audiobooks from the library for free and I never have to leave my house.

I love that book! Since I don't know anyone else who's read it, I can only relish quotes from it in my head. Every time I open a jar of peanut butter I think "Straight from the jar, baby!" When I smiled the other night and my mouth made that little crackle sound, I thought, "Bacon frying."

I saw someone describe it as organizing your own newspaper, which is perfect since I follow a bunch of independent journalists on here (and substack) - no more Post or Times for me. Sometimes I want the conversational chaos of Resistance Twitter ... and sometimes I just want cute dog pictures.
