ICE contractor locked an immigrant and her baby at an O’Hare hotel for five days Valentina Galvis' detention at a hotel raises questions about the types of facilities being turned into de facto detention centers as the Trump administration ramps up immigration detention.

A Chicago woman went to immigration court. Her case was dismissed; she and her infant were taken by federal agents who turned her over to contractor MVM. They spent five days confined at the Sonesta O'Hare hotel without communication to the outside world.

Alaska Ignored Warning Signs of a Budget Crisis. Now It Doesn’t Have Funding to Fix Crumbling Schools. Lawmakers only budgeted $40 million of the nearly $800 million that districts say is needed to fix and maintain schools to keep them safe and operating. Gov. Mike Dunleavy then vetoed more than two-th...

If you want to see the consequences of low education funding, look no further than Alaska.

And I'm hearing some of the tribal colleges have lost students and employees who weren't sure whether the schools would close without federal funding.

Tribal College Campuses Are Falling Apart. The U.S. Hasn’t Fulfilled Its Promise to Fund the Schools. Decades ago, Congress made a commitment to fund a higher education system for Indigenous communities. But a quarter-billion-dollar annual shortfall has led to crimped budgets and crumbling buildings, ...

But...

Even the congressional budget proposals are a quarter-billion less than tribal colleges should be getting. See:

The administration also has started paying the tribal colleges the USDA grants that were frozen earlier this year, although nobody has explained the change of heart to the schools.

Tribal colleges are feeling guarded relief after both the House and Senate defied the Trump administration by including funding in next year's budget.

Lawyer Dilan Esper writing about how amazing the Bollea v. Gawker case was for him while insisting no harm done to the 1st Amendment.

I can't say that much about our mediation strategy (it's shrouded in lawyer-client privilege and work product) but I have seen Nick Denton make accusations about it, and they are false. We were willing to settle; Gawker needed to offer a lot more than they did though.

In other words, Peter Thiel was not my client and he was not directing the litigation behind the scenes. We were actually litigating the case exactly the same way we would have had Bollea been personally paying his bills.

Thiel may have had his reasons for getting Gawker (and to be clear, he apparently paid the bills for several cases that were brought by us and others against Gawker), but the strategy doesn't work without a viable case. Gawker hung itself with its conduct towards Bollea.

The bottom line is I take a great deal of professional pride in what we did. Precisely because we actually didn't ruin the First Amendment. No outlet is prevented from doing real journalism as a result of the Bollea v. Gawker case. We simply enforced a long existing norm.

And drew a line in an era of "anything goes" content on the Internet. This was Hulk Hogan's legacy, and in a very real way, it is mine as well.

I had to spend two and a half years fighting a frivolous lawsuit that was a direct result of Bollea v. Gawker. And that lawsuit massively decreased our capability to do what we do, so I take issue with one of Hulk Hogan's lawyers claiming that Bollea v. Gawker had no impact on journalism

β€œStaggering” Water Loss Driven by Groundwater Mining Poses Global Threat A new study finds that freshwater resources are rapidly disappearing, creating arid β€œmega” regions and causing sea levels to rise.

I'm watching a Senate budget markup hearing and apparently the Senate doesn't make budget proposals available to the public that pays for those proposals. A spokesman said it was because the process has been too contentious.
